How it works, and why.
01What it is
M⁴ starts as a network for beauty routines, made by the people who do them for a living: stylists, makeup artists and estheticians, not celebrities. Each of them broadcasts real routines from a premium vanity mirror that is also a capture device they can trust.
The mirror is not the business on its own. The hardware makes the supply reliable, the software makes it shoppable, fair pay for creators makes it repeat, and programming makes it a channel. What matters is time spent on real routines that earns real creators real income, not mirrors shipped or streams started.
02The consent design
Consent is physical. There is a mechanical camera shutter whose position you can see across the room. A live light is wired to the camera’s power, so the camera cannot be live without it showing. Going live takes a press-and-hold, a sound and a countdown. The mirror can wake a private preview when someone sits down, but it can never cross into live on its own.
- Adult creators only at launch. The shutter is closed in the box and when the mirror starts up.
- No face recognition, identity tracking, inferred ethnicity or attractiveness scoring. Ever.
- No selling of viewer or creator data. Export and deletion are designed in from the start, and the logs record states, never camera frames.
- Paid, gifted and affiliate relationships are always disclosed on screen.
- A lost or resold mirror can be shut off remotely.
03The product
The mirror. A tabletop vanity mirror with a camera, a tunable light ring and microphones, kept simple and cool by doing the heavy lifting on the phone.
The creator app. Show control, products, chat and results on the phone, with a clear sequence: sealed, ready, private preview, countdown, live, ending, review.
The audience side. A shared link opens in the browser without an app: live and replay, products tied to moments in the routine, and routines you can search by occasion, technique or need.
Working with brands. Creators opt in to a brief; they are never assigned one. They can turn a brief down, mention drawbacks, and decline clip rights without losing standing.
04How it gets built
Five stages, each gated. No production tooling until creators show they keep using it.
- A — Behaviour rigA phone app and off-the-shelf mirror rigs with a small group of creators. No custom electronics.
- B — Appearance prototypeIndustrial design, a looks-like model, and usability research on the privacy shutter.
- C — Engineering unitsSmall engineering builds to test light, image, sound, durability and cleaning.
- D — Design validationCertification and safety testing, and a rotating field trial with working creators.
- E — Founder EditionA first production run, sold directly.
05Identity studies
Brand renders: the invitation world the product arrives in. The device itself stays unseen until launch.
